Sell Windows and Doors With AI Quotes: Can a Small Dealer Make Six Figures?
Can a small window and door dealer reach six figures with AI quotes? Worked example estimates from about $80K to $240K a year, plus costs and the EPA rule.
A small window and door dealer can reach six figures on paper, but only if it closes roughly 10 jobs a month at healthy margins. In the example estimates below, a dealer closing 10 jobs at $8,000 nets about $108,000 a year. A solo dealer closing 4 jobs nets about $80,000. AI quoting does not create demand; it shortens the time from enquiry to a priced, signed proposal. One funded example is Bravi, a Y Combinator Fall 2025 company that raised a $1.8M seed round per Dealroom (17 September 2026).
This is research, not legal, tax or financial advice. Every dollar figure in the profit section is an example estimate with its assumptions shown, not a benchmark and not a promise.
What is the window and door dealer opportunity?
Quotes in this trade are slow and technical. Each opening has a size, glass package, frame material and install condition, and the homeowner usually wants a price before committing to a visit.
That is the gap software vendors are chasing. Bravi's Y Combinator launch post says installers lose "30–40% of potential revenue" from missed calls and slow follow-up. That is the company's own claim, not an independent measurement. Bravi also says its agents answer calls and chats, pre-qualify leads, book callbacks and send quotes.
Be realistic about who these tools are built for. Bravi's own tagline is "AI operating system for home improvement manufacturers," and its site says "Trusted by 20+ manufacturers" with custom pricing. A small dealer is more likely to use cheaper quoting software than to buy an enterprise platform.
One caution on timing. The IRS page (updated 28 April 2026) says the 30% energy-efficient home improvement credit covers improvements made through 31 December 2025. It shows no extension. Do not build 2026 sales scripts around it without checking current IRS guidance.
How much can a window and door dealer make?
Revenue per job times jobs per month, minus the cost of the windows and labor, minus overhead. Installed prices vary widely. Fixr (updated 21 January 2026) puts the average at about $800 per window and a single-story home with 10 to 15 windows at $8,000 to $12,000. Pella (updated 14 May 2026) gives $800 to $1,600 for installed vinyl.
All the numbers below are example estimates. I assumed an $8,000 average job (10 windows at $800) and a 35% gross margin after product and installation labor. Overhead covers insurance, vehicle, software, lead cost and office help, and excludes any owner salary.
| Version | Jobs per month | Revenue per month | Gross profit at 35% | Overhead per month | Profit per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small (owner sells, subs install) | 4 | $32,000 | $11,200 | $4,500 | $6,700 | $80,400 |
| Medium (one part-time estimator) | 10 | $80,000 | $28,000 | $19,000 | $9,000 | $108,000 |
| Large (two reps, office manager) | 25 | $200,000 | $70,000 | $50,000 | $20,000 | $240,000 |
Does the title's six-figure target hold? Only in the medium and large cases. The small version falls short at about $80,000, and it needs roughly 5 jobs a month at the same assumptions to cross $100,000. The result is sensitive: a 5-point drop in gross margin (to 30%) cuts the small version's profit to $5,100 a month, or $61,200 a year.
Lead cost is the number most likely to break the model. If you pay for leads, a low close rate can push overhead well past the assumptions above.
Which companies are already doing this?
Five companies show what funded and established players do, and what a small dealer can copy. Funding is only listed where a source discloses it.
| Company | What it does | Money | What you can copy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bravi | AI quote configurator, knowledge base, phone receptionist for home improvement manufacturers | $1.8M seed per Dealroom (17 September 2026); no named lead | Answer every call and chat fast; log product rules so anyone can quote |
| Fenestratio | Web quoting with built-in CRM and e-signature | No funding disclosed; says it processed over $150 million of orders for over 50 companies in 2025 (self-reported) | Quote and sign in one flow |
| WinDoor Quote | Quoting with card and ACH payments, e-signed PDFs | Not disclosed | Take a deposit when the quote is signed |
| Window Nation | Direct-to-consumer replacement windows and doors | Bought by AEA Investors from Cortec Group in July 2021, price not listed; bought NewSouth Window Solutions from MITER Brands in September 2025 | Specialize in replacement and sell direct |
| Window World | Franchise network, 210 units | 2024 disclosure document, per Franzy: $45,000 fee, $123,368 to $331,168 total investment, 12% royalty | Standardize the process; not a $50K start |
What they did with millions is mostly buy brands, build software or pay franchise royalties. What you can do with $5,000 to $50,000 is narrower: pick a niche (for example, one town and one product line), build a quote template, and respond to every lead inside minutes.

Do you need a licence or certification?
Yes, for lead-safe work in older homes, and probably a state or local contractor licence too. The EPA says anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in homes built before 1978 must be certified, including sole proprietorships. The contractors page states that "Window replacement and demolition of painted surfaces are always covered regardless of square footage."
The firm certification fee is $300 and lasts five years (as of 27 May 2026). Renew at least 90 days before expiry. Certification cannot be transferred if you sell the firm. A certified renovator must be assigned to each job. A firm cannot even advertise covered work in pre-1978 homes without certification. Some states run their own programs, so check yours.
Contractor licensing is set by states and varies. The BLS notes only that some states may require glaziers to hold a license. Do not assume your state is exempt, and do not describe installation as unlicensed work in your marketing. Confirm with your state contractor board before you quote a job.
How much does it cost to start?
Under $50,000 is realistic for a subcontractor model, but there are no sourced industry benchmarks for most lines. The table shows example estimates, except the EPA fee.
| Item | Low | Typical |
|---|---|---|
| EPA RRP firm certification (as of 27 May 2026) | $300 | $300 |
| Renovator training course, state licence, insurance | Example estimate: $2,000 | Example estimate: $6,000 |
| Quoting software and CRM | Example estimate: $1,200 a year | Example estimate: $4,000 a year |
| Sample kit and branding | Example estimate: $1,500 | Example estimate: $4,000 |
| Marketing launch (website, local ads) | Example estimate: $2,000 | Example estimate: $10,000 |
| Working capital for deposits and supplier terms | Example estimate: $5,000 | Example estimate: $25,000 |
Compare that with the Window World disclosure above, where total investment starts at $123,368 (per Franzy).
How do you start a window and door dealer business, step by step?
Start with one product line and one service area, then add volume.
- Pick a niche: replacement vinyl windows, entry doors or patio doors in one metro area.
- Check your state's contractor licensing rules and register your business.
- Get EPA RRP firm certification and train a certified renovator (EPA fees and process).
- Buy general liability and workers' compensation cover where your state requires it.
- Sign supplier or manufacturer dealer terms and ask for a price book you can load into software.
- Hire or subcontract an install crew and agree rates per opening in writing.
- Build a quote template with fixed options and a deposit line, then test it on five friendly quotes.
- Set up a phone line or AI receptionist that answers within seconds and books the measure visit.
- Run local search ads and ask past customers for reviews.
- Track enquiries, quotes sent, quotes signed and cost per signed job every week.
- Hire an estimator only when the owner is the bottleneck.
Which free tools and resources can you use?
Few of the quoting tools publish a price. Treat every row below as a demo-first purchase.
| Tool | What for | Pricing disclosure | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fenestratio | Web quoting, CRM, e-signatures | Not on the home page | fenestratio.com |
| WinDoor Quote | Quoting, deposits, e-signed PDFs | Not shown on the article | Window + Door |
| Bravi | Quote configurator, receptionist | "Custom pricing" | bravi.app |
| EPA lead-safe resources | Rules, fees, certification | Free to read | EPA |
How can you use AI in a window and door dealer business?
Use it first on the phone and on the quote. An AI receptionist can answer after-hours calls, pre-qualify leads and book callbacks, which is the use case Bravi highlights. AI quoting reads your price book and returns a number from window dimensions and options. All of this is vendor-described, so run a one-month trial and compare answered calls and signed quotes against your current numbers.
Keep a human on price approval, measurements and anything touching lead-safe rules. For more on phone automation, see reselling AI receptionists to contractors.
How do you scale it faster?
Add a second estimator before a second installer, because a quote that waits a day is a quote that goes elsewhere. Then add crews as signed jobs exceed what your subs can install. Free tools stop working when you need to price from a supplier's catalog, take deposits online and keep a job history, which is where paid quoting and CRM software starts.
Do not copy the franchise or acquisition path on a small budget. Window Nation was bought by a private equity firm and has itself bought a brand, and Window World's disclosure shows a 12% royalty. Those routes need capital and operations a new dealer does not have. A comparable lesson from another trade is in this HVAC company's AI playbook.
What are the risks?
The biggest risks are margin squeeze, lead cost, install quality and lead-safe compliance. Window replacement is a high-ticket purchase, so one botched install or a missed lead-safe rule can wipe out several jobs of profit. The EPA rule applies from the first job in an older home.
Software risk is separate. Quoting tools that sound good in a launch post may not match your supplier's products. Ask for references from dealers your size.
What's still unclear?
Several things are unclear. First, no public net-margin benchmark for independent dealers is cited here, so the 35% gross margin is an assumption you must replace with your supplier prices. Second, Bravi's funding is reported by one outlet, with no named lead investor, and its sources disagree on location (Dealroom says Cholet, France; Y Combinator lists New York City). Third, Bravi's own pages describe manufacturers as customers, and it is not clear how a small US dealer would use or buy it. Fourth, Fenestratio's volume figures are self-reported. Finally, whether Congress or the IRS will revive the window credit is unknown.
Frequently asked questions
Can a small window and door dealer make six figures?
On paper, yes. In the example estimates in this post, a dealer closing 10 jobs a month at $8,000 each, with a 35% gross margin and $19,000 of monthly overhead, nets about $108,000 a year. A 5-point margin drop or a slow month of leads erases much of it. These are assumptions, not benchmarks or guarantees.
Do I need a certification to replace windows?
In pre-1978 homes, yes. The EPA says window replacement is always covered by its lead-safe (RRP) rule regardless of square footage, and sole proprietors are included. The firm fee is $300 for five years as of 27 May 2026. State contractor licensing is separate and varies, so check your state board.
What can AI quoting software actually do for a dealer?
Vendors describe configuring products, generating quotes, answering calls and chats, booking callbacks and e-signing proposals. Bravi describes the call, chat and callback functions; Fenestratio and WinDoor Quote describe quoting, e-signatures and payments. These are vendor claims. Most target manufacturers and larger dealers, and pricing is often custom or unpublished, so ask for a demo and a price before planning around any of them.
Is the federal tax credit for windows still available?
The IRS page, last updated 28 April 2026, says the 30% energy-efficient home improvement credit applies to improvements made through 31 December 2025. Windows were capped at $600 and exterior doors at $500 in total. The page shows no extension, so do not use the credit as a 2026 selling point without checking IRS guidance.
Should I buy a Window World style franchise instead?
A franchise buys a brand and a system, at a price. Window World's 2024 disclosure document, as summarized by Franzy, lists a $45,000 franchise fee, $123,368 to $331,168 total investment and a 12% royalty. That is well above a $5,000 to $50,000 start, so treat it as a different business.
