Craftwork, a Charlotte, North Carolina home painting company, landed a $7 million funding round reported by Axios Charlotte on 19 January 2025. Its pitch is online estimates and full-time employee painting crews instead of a van and a phone number. You can test the estimate idea with a few thousand dollars, but whether a painting business reaches $100,000 a year depends on jobs per month, labor and overhead, and the math below shows both sides.

What is the painting business opportunity?

Homeowners want a price without waiting for a stranger to visit, and many painters are slow to send one. Feldy's founders write that estimates "do not go out fast enough to homeowners" and that a painter can take two or three days, often longer, to send one (self-reported, from the company's launch post).

Craftwork's answer is speed. Its site says it gives estimates "in hours, not days" with no home visits required (company claim). It describes itself as a full-service home painting company that uses software to improve the homeowner and operator experience, and it deploys trained, full-time employees rather than subcontractors.

The labor side is thin. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists no formal educational credential and moderate-term on-the-job training for painters, and projects 3% employment growth from 2025 to 2035. That means a low barrier to entry, which also means competition on price.

How much can a painting business make?

This is the section the headline asks about, so here is the math. Everything below is an example estimate built on assumptions you should replace with your own local numbers. It is not a forecast and not a promise of income.

Anchor for pricing: Craftwork's own FAQ says the national average interior project runs $2,000 to $5,000, and single-story exteriors $3,000 to $7,000 (company figures, as of 12 October 2026).

Example estimateSmall (owner + 1 helper)Medium (2 crews)Large (office + 3 or 4 crews)
Jobs per month61630
Average job price$3,000$3,500$4,000
Monthly revenue$18,000$56,000$120,000
Materials (20%)$3,600$11,200$24,000
Crew labor$4,500$19,600$45,600
Marketing$0 (in fixed)$4,480$9,600
Insurance, vehicles, software, admin$2,900$9,000$32,000
Monthly profit before tax$7,000$11,720$8,800
Annual profit before tax$84,000$140,640$105,600

Three things stand out:

  • The small version falls short of $100,000 under these assumptions, even with a full calendar of six jobs every month.
  • The medium version clears $100,000 only if you fill 16 jobs a month, every month. Painting is seasonal in much of the country, so a slow winter changes the number.
  • The large version earns less than the medium one here, because office staff and overhead grow faster than margin. Scale only helps if you keep unit economics tight.

For context, BLS reports a median wage of $49,400 for employed painters in May 2025. Owner profit has to cover the risk and unpaid hours that an employee does not carry.

Which companies are already doing this?

Funding in this niche is thin. Here are the companies and models worth learning from.

Feldy (San Francisco)AI software for home service estimates and take-offsY Combinator Winter 2024, over 200 paying customers per its launch post; no funding statedA software tool you can use instead of building one

Treat this as four data points. Feldy is a vendor, not a competitor. Paintzen's round is a decade old.

What did they do with millions, and what can you do with $5k?

Craftwork's model needs capital: software, a product team, and salaried crews paid whether or not the calendar is full. With $5,000 to $50,000 you cannot copy that.

You can copy the front door. Put a short quote form on a simple website, promise a written estimate the same day from photos and room counts, and run local ads. Craftwork's own customer reviews mention estimates provided from photos and videos. Start by painting jobs yourself or with one helper, and add crews only after your calendar stays full for several months.

Do you need a licence or certification?

Yes, probably, and the rules depend on where you work. The federal rule applies everywhere there are older homes: the EPA says anyone paid to disturb paint in housing built before 1978 must be certified, including sole proprietorships, and painters are named. Firms cannot advertise covered work without certification.

ItemDetail (as of 12 October 2026)
EPA RRP firm certification$300, good for five years, processing a week or two
Renovator training8-hour course including 2 hours of practical skills training; at least one certified renovator per firm
Small-job exemption6 sq ft or less per room inside, 20 sq ft or less outside; window replacement and demolition always covered
Authorized statesAL, DE, GA, IA, KS, MA, MS, NC, OK, OR, RI, UT, VT, WA, WI run their own programs

Painting is not "no rules needed" work. Check your state licensing board before you advertise.

How do you start a painting business, step by step?

  1. Check your state and city rules for contractor licensing and any painting thresholds.
  2. Get EPA RRP firm certification and train at least one renovator if you will touch pre-1978 homes.
  3. Form an LLC and open a business bank account.
  4. Buy general liability insurance, and workers' compensation if you hire.
  5. Build a one-page site with a short quote form: rooms, sizes, photos.
  6. Write a price sheet from your own costs, per room and per square foot, and test it on three jobs.
  7. Claim a Google Business Profile and collect reviews from your first customers.
  8. Promise a written estimate within a set time, such as the same day, and keep that promise.
  9. Take deposits and use written contracts with scope, paint brand and warranty terms.
  10. Track every job's hours, materials and profit.
  11. Hire a first helper only when you turn down work for lack of hands.

How can you use AI in a painting business?

Software now targets the slowest step: the estimate. Feldy says it helps teams capture jobsites and create take-offs and estimates, and it works across painting, roofing, remodeling and other trades (company claim). Pricing is not published on its YC page.

Other uses cost little: an AI receptionist for missed calls, a template that turns room photos into a written scope, and automated follow-up texts after an estimate. Test any tool on your own jobs first, and review every quote before it goes out.

How do you scale it faster?

Add crews only when your calendar stays full. Craftwork's approach is full-time employees rather than subcontractors, which gives control over quality but adds payroll in slow weeks. In the table above, the large version earned less than the medium one, so scale is not a goal in itself.

Free tools stop working when you need scheduling across crews, job costing and a CRM. At that point you pay for software, or you pay in missed follow-ups.

What are the risks?

  • Thin margins and seasonality. One bad month of weather or empty leads can erase a good one.
  • Legal risk. Working on pre-1978 homes without EPA certification is a violation, and firms cannot advertise covered work without it.
  • Warranty exposure. A multi-year guarantee like Craftwork's costs money when jobs fail.
  • Low entry barrier. BLS lists no formal credential for the occupation, so price competition is real.

This is research, not legal, tax or financial advice.

What's still unclear?

  • Craftwork's economics. Revenue, margins and the number of painters are not published, so it is unclear whether online estimates make the business more profitable.
  • "Instant" quotes. Craftwork's site promises estimates in hours and same-day virtual estimates, not instant ones.
  • The lead investor. The sources cited here do not name which firm led the $7M round.
  • Whether $100,000 is realistic. It depends on your local prices, job volume and costs. The example above reaches it in the medium and large cases, not the small one.

Frequently asked questions

How much did Craftwork raise?

Axios Charlotte reported on 19 January 2025 that Craftwork landed a $7 million funding round, according to the headline listed on Craftwork's Y Combinator profile. Caplight lists Slow Ventures, Pioneer Fund, Forerunner Ventures and Y Combinator among the Series A investors. The company's revenue is not published.

Is Feldy a painting company?

No. According to its Y Combinator profile, Feldy sells field-first AI software to home service businesses, including painting, roofing and remodeling businesses. It helps teams capture jobsites, create take-offs and estimates, and document work. The profile does not state any funding amount.

Do I need a certification to paint houses?

Federal law requires EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) firm certification for paid work that disturbs paint in homes built before 1978, including for sole proprietors. The EPA fee is $300. Your state or city may also require a contractor licence, so check locally before you advertise.

How much does a painter earn?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $49,400 a year for painters, construction and maintenance, as of May 2025. The lowest 10% earned under $37,440 and the highest 10% over $78,810. Owners of painting businesses earn differently, because they carry costs, insurance and the risk of empty weeks.

Can I start a painting business with $5,000?

A solo version is plausible: tools, ladders, sprayer or brushes, insurance, EPA certification, a quote form and some ads. Costs vary by state and insurer, so treat the table below as example estimates. You will need cash for materials before the first deposit clears, and a licence if your state requires one.
