Gelt, a Miami-based AI-native tax firm, raised a $13 million Series A (total funding $21.2 million) in a round dated 30 September 2025. Its pitch: wealthy clients, such as tech executives, healthcare entrepreneurs and real estate investors, get tax planning all year, not a scramble in April. As of 13 October 2026, its site lists strategy plans starting at $3,500 to $8,000. This article covers what Gelt does, the math for a small version, and what you can build with $5k to $50k.

What is an AI-native tax firm?

An AI-native tax firm is a practice designed around software, with licensed professionals doing the judgment work. Gelt says it combines advanced AI with human expertise so that AI handles the heavy tax-code analysis and its CPAs focus on strategy.

The humans are real and credentialed. Gelt's about page lists CPAs and IRS enrolled agents, and its pricing page says clients' taxes are handled by an internal team of licensed experts. The AI is the speed layer, not the signature.

Who pays for tax strategy, and why now?

Gelt says its demand comes from technology executives, healthcare entrepreneurs, real estate investors and financial services leaders: people with several entities, investments or states to track. Its pricing page describes fit as owners with multiple entities, investments or operations across states, or situations that feel too complex for a traditional CPA. No dollar income threshold is published.

The company's own example shows the value. A venture partner was paid through a standard W-2 salary; Gelt says it restructured the income through an S-Corp and the client saved over $100,000 in one year. That is a company-reported result for one client, not a typical outcome.

Gelt also says it has tripled its user base year over year and reports profit margins of 55 to 66 percent. Both are company claims. Its about page claims 500+ businesses and families and over 93 percent retention for 2023 to 2025, also company-reported.

How much can an AI-native tax firm make?

Gelt's published prices are the best benchmark we have. As of 13 October 2026, its home page lists starting prices of $1,500 to $2,500 a year for filing and quarterly estimates, and $3,500 to $8,000 for strategy plans. Compliance is priced per entity, per tax year, and strategy is not included. Gelt says exact pricing is set during evaluation.

Below is an example estimate. It uses $2,500 a year per client for compliance, $3,500 per one-time strategy plan, and $8,000 for a few larger plans. These are assumptions, not promised results. Costs are guesses for a solo credentialed operator, and no client counts are guaranteed.

ItemSmall (solo)Medium (1 staff)Large (3 staff)

Compliance revenue ($2,500 each)$50,000$150,000$375,000

Larger plans at $8,0000010 plans = $80,000
Total revenue$78,000$237,500$665,000
Staff cost$0$75,000$240,000
Software and AI tools$7,200$18,000$40,000
Insurance$3,000$6,000$12,000
Licenses and continuing education$1,500$3,000$6,000
Marketing$6,000$20,000$60,000

Annual profit before owner taxes$60,300$115,500$277,000
Monthly (example estimate)about $5,000about $9,600about $23,100

The honest read: the small version works only if you can win 20 clients who will pay those prices, and that is the hard part. A first-year solo practice will likely have fewer clients and lower prices than Gelt, which has a brand, a team and funding behind it.

Which companies are already doing this?

Five companies show different angles. Only Gelt serves clients directly. The rest sell tools to firms, and one is a cautionary tale.

Details: CPA Practice Advisor reported that Accrual's AI agents read client documents, find missing information and produce draft returns for professional review. Accrual says it cuts preparation time by more than 85 percent and review time by up to 60 percent, and names H&R Block, Armanino and Creative Planning among firms it has worked with. Those are company claims.

Basis raised its $100M Series B with GV and Khosla Ventures also participating, per CPA Practice Advisor; the valuation and round are also reported by Fintech Futures. Basis says about 30 percent of the top 25 accounting firms use it.

Black Ore says U.S.-based CPAs do a preliminary review before documents go back to the accounting firm.

Bench is the warning. Accounting Today reported that it shut down suddenly on 27 December 2024 with roughly 35,000 customers, then was acquired by Employer.com. The reason for the shutdown was not disclosed.

What did they do with millions, and what can you do with $5k to $50k?

The funded companies spent on engineers, models and sales teams. You cannot copy that. You can copy the structure: software for the repetitive work, a credentialed professional accountable for the result.

With $5k to $50k, a practical version looks like this:

  1. Be the credentialed professional yourself (CPA, enrolled agent or attorney), or partner with one.
  2. Pick one narrow niche, such as physicians with a practice, or real estate investors. Gelt's own "Who We Serve" section is organized by industry.
  3. Sell a flat-fee planning package, not hourly billing. Gelt's site markets "no billable hours" and prices per entity per tax year.
  4. Use off-the-shelf AI tools for research, client summaries and scenario drafts, with your own review of everything.
  5. Add a free calculator or quote page as a lead magnet. Gelt publishes calculators for S-corp, PTET and the Augusta Rule on its site. The same logic drives instant online quotes in this painting startup case.

Do you need a license or certification?

For anything beyond basic preparation, yes in practice. The IRS says anyone who prepares federal returns for compensation must have a valid PTIN, which costs $18.75 for 2026. The IRS also notes that paid preparers include CPAs, enrolled agents, attorneys and many others who have no professional credential.

The enrolled agent path, per the IRS:

  • Get a PTIN.
  • Pass all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination within three years (administered by PSI Services since 1 March 2026).
  • Apply for enrollment and pass a suitability check.
  • Renew every three years with continuing education.

CPA licensing is set by each state board of accountancy, so check your state's requirements. This is not licensed work you can do on "no skill needed" terms.

How much does it cost to start?

Only the PTIN fee is a published number. Everything else below is an example estimate for a solo practice.

ItemLowTypical
PTIN (2026, IRS)$18.75$18.75
Software and AI tools, first year$2,000$7,200
Professional liability insurance$1,500$3,000
Website, intake and e-signature$500$2,000
Marketing, first six months$1,000$6,000
Credential exam and study (if needed)$0 (already credentialed)$3,000 or more
Totalabout $5,000about $21,000 or more

How do you start a tax strategy firm, step by step?

  1. Confirm your credential (CPA, EA or attorney), or line up a partner who holds one.
  2. Renew or obtain your PTIN on the IRS site.
  3. Choose one niche and write down the five decisions those clients face each year (entity choice, timing of income, estimated payments).
  4. Draft a flat-fee menu: compliance per entity per year, plus scoped strategy projects.
  5. Write an engagement letter that defines scope and what you do not advise on.
  6. Buy professional liability insurance before your first paid client.
  7. Set up secure document intake and e-signature.
  8. Build a free calculator or checklist for your niche.
  9. Win 3 to 5 pilot clients through referrals, local professional groups or content.
  10. Run quarterly check-ins; this is where year-round planning differs from annual filing.
  11. Track time per client so you know your real hourly return before hiring.

How can you use AI in a tax firm?

Use AI where errors are cheap to catch: summarizing a client's documents, drafting scenario comparisons, writing client-ready explanations, and building a checklist of missing information. Accrual's approach, AI drafts and a professional reviews, is the model to copy. Both Accrual and Basis sell to firms rather than solo operators.

For intake calls, the idea of an automated phone agent is covered in this AI receptionist playbook, written for contractors but the setup carries over.

Never let AI be the last check on a number that goes on a return.

What are the risks?

  • Liability. Clients act on your advice. A wrong entity or timing call can cost real money.
  • Concentration. The model needs a steady flow of high-income clients. Gelt's results do not prove a solo firm can find them.
  • Venture failure. Bench had roughly 35,000 customers and still shut down abruptly.
  • Company claims. Savings, margins and efficiency figures in this article come from the companies and investors involved.

What's still unclear?

Gelt does not publish an income threshold for clients, and its page does not make clear which of its two price pairs applies to businesses and which to individuals. Its margin, retention and savings figures are not independently audited. Accrual's and Basis's efficiency claims are company or investor statements.

The weakest point of the argument: the evidence here shows what a funded firm charges, not how many clients a new solo firm can win at those prices. There is no public figure here for total spending by wealthy Americans on tax strategy.

This is research, not legal, tax or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI-native tax firm?

It is a tax practice built around software from day one, with licensed professionals doing the judgment work. Gelt, a Miami-based example, says it combines advanced AI with human expertise so its CPAs can spend their time on strategy rather than tax-code research. The AI speeds up analysis and projections. A credentialed human still signs and is accountable.

Can I start a tax strategy firm without being a CPA?

You can prepare returns for pay with a PTIN, which the IRS says is required for anyone paid to prepare federal returns. But the IRS separates CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys from preparers with no professional credential. If you want to advise on complex strategy for wealthy clients, plan to earn the CPA or enrolled agent credential, or hire one.

How much does Gelt charge?

As of 13 October 2026, Gelt's site lists starting prices of $1,500 to $2,500 a year for tax filing and quarterly estimates, and $3,500 to $8,000 for strategy plans. Compliance is priced per entity, per tax year, and strategy is not included in it. Gelt says exact scope and pricing are set during evaluation.

How much does it cost to become an enrolled agent?

The IRS says you need a PTIN, passing scores on all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination within three years, an enrollment application and a suitability check. A PTIN costs $18.75 for 2026. The IRS page does not state the exam or enrollment fee, so check current fees with the exam provider.

Is a tax strategy business risky?

Yes. Your clients rely on your advice, so errors can cost them money and cost you the relationship. Credentials, written engagement letters and professional liability insurance matter more here than in most small businesses. Funded startups also fail: Bench Accounting shut down abruptly on 27 December 2024 with roughly 35,000 customers.
